Madhubani is derived from the word “Madhuban” meaning “forest of honey”. Madhubani (or Mithila) paintings are one of the oldest and have a reference to the ancient epic Ramayana. It is believed that when Ma Sita was getting married to Lord Rama, Raja Janak asked everyone to paint the walls of their house with Madhubani paintings.
Earlier, these paintings were made using natural colours like turmeric (haldi for yellow), sindoor (vermillion for red), rice paste (for white), etc. Now, these are done on canvas, cloth or many more items using paints and brush.
