Manjusha is a traditional Indian folk art form that originated from the ancient city of Anga (modern-day Bhagalpur). Manjusha art is believed to be the only art form in the history of the art form in India which has a sequential representation of the story and is displayed in a series.
The name of this art form also holds an interesting story. The Sanskrit word Manjusa means a ‘box’. These boxes were made from bamboo, Jute-Straw, and paper inside which the devotees kept their ceremonial materials. These boxes are used in Bishahari puja, a festival dedicated to the Snake God that is celebrated in Bhagalpur and nearby regions, India.
The boxes were illustrated with paintings that tell a tale. And the tale was of Bihula who saved her husband from the deity’s wrath and a snake-bite and also of Bishahari or Mansa.
When it comes to Manjusha paintings majorly three colors are used namely pink, green, and yellow.
