Indian Folk Art Foundation, Australia hosts Australia’s first Tanjore Painting Exhibition
Indian Folk Art Foundation (IFAF), Australia are proud to have host Tanjore Painting exhibition in Melbourne for the first time in Australian history.
The Tanjore Painting Melbourne exhibition was held from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th of August 2022 at Shri Siva Vishnu Temple, Carrum Downs and, featured around 90 endangered folk arts of India.
IFAF curated 50 Tanjore paintings as part of the exhibition, which was the largest collection of Tanjore paintings in Australia.
What is Tanjore Painting?
Thanjavur Painting is an ancient traditional Indian folk art form and their common theme is mythology. They demonstrate that spirituality is a necessary component of a creative work.
Tanjore Painting is a classical South Indian art developed in the late 16th century in Thanjavur, also known as Tanjore in Tamil Nadu, a south Indian state.
The art of Tanjore originated in the city of Thanjavur, which was originally the capital city of the Chola Empire. It has taken on its own look, enriched with intricate architectural designs and bright colors after being influenced by the murals from imperial era.
The unique style of Thanjavur or Tanjore painting as known today, is known to have flourished in the Maratha court of Thanjavur between the 17th and 19th centuries.
The Maratha people of India, who had been practicing painting for centuries, found new ways to depict the human body and naturalistic landscapes under the guidance of King Serfoji II. King played a particularly significant role in developing this artform.
Why Learn Tanjore Painting the Old Way?
“The Old Way” of Tanjore Painting is one of the very few courses available that still use natural ingredients like tamarind, clay, chukka kallu, and other long-lasting natural ingredients and process followed some 400 years ago. It takes back the students to the old ways, from preparing the board to creating beautiful Tanjore paintings. Students can interact with other students and gurus during the course using an online forum.
The entire course is structured in a way that allows students to learn step by step, at their own pace during the week. Students should expect to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week to complete the course.

Thus, exhibition and sale is organized in Space2b another Melbourne based organization pioneering in promoting indigenous arts and artwork of refugees/ newly arrived migrants. The event started on the 3rd of May and will run until 30th of May 2022.

Our first event in Australia: International Indian Folk Art Gallery (IIFAG) Australia and Space2B, Australia proudly present some of the rarest Indian Folk Arts in Melbourne, Australia from 3rd May – 30th May, 2022.
We will be curating a unique collection of 28 artifacts. Genuine handmade artworks from traditional artists from all parts of the Indian sub-continent.
