Description
Sulphi – Bastar Folk Art – Folk painting is an art form that can be seen in every house of India, regardless it is drawn on the walls or floors of houses, temples, etc. Several women in traditional societies obtain this skill during their domestic chores from their elder women relatives for which this art can be underlined as one of the best artistic expressions of women. This art form is known as Gadh, Baanaa, Baadhaa Chauk, Rangoli , Alpanaa Aribaanaa Muggu, Kolam or Eipaanaa in different parts of the country. Baanaa and Rangoli have a distinction i.e. only rice flour and turmeric flour are used to draw Baanaa while Rangoli is drawn with different colors which are bought from the market. Gadh, Baanaa and Baadhaa are the kinds of Bastar folk painting. Gadh is drawn on the walls of the houses or temples or Ghotuls, and Baanaa or Baadhaa is drawn on the floor. In the Bastar region, while the paintings are made on the walls, dhaa are drawn on the floor. In the Bastar region, while the paintings are made on the walls, it is called GAD LIKHATO but if they are drawn on the floor they call those BAANAA or BAADHAA LIKHATO as such the painters are known as GAD LIKHATO LOG or CHITARKAAR or CHITARKAAL and BANA LIKHTO BITI (in case a woman draws) or BAANAA LIKHATO BITAA (in case a man draws). Generally in some parts and communities of Bastar the GAAINTAA, a member of the family of that person who is supposed to be the first man who established the village as also a priest of the earth goddess or PUJAARI, priest [PUJAARI does not belong to a Brahmanic caste rather he belongs to the Muriya (a tribal group) community] draws for the marriage ceremony. One can find the story of the origin of all these paintings and drawings in the two (out of four) major oral epics of Bastar viz. TIJAA JAGAAR and LACHHMII JAGAAR.
