The Peacock is a constant in the Indian culture. Lord Krishna wears a peacock feather in his crown, Lord Karthikeya uses peacock as his vehicle and Goddess Saraswati is often depicted with a peacock. It is a symbol of beauty, grace and pride. Besides, it is also the National bird of India.
Kalamkari derives its name from the Persian word where ‘Kalam’ refers to ‘pen’ and ‘Kari’ means ‘craftsmanship’. It was originally the art of hand painting on fabric using bamboo pens or hand blocks. Different motifs such as peacocks, flowers, and divine characters from Ramayana and Mahabharata are drawn. While these are mostly drawn on fabric, artists have been practicing them on canvas too in the current times. Kalamkari is mostly practiced largely in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
