My first encounter with art was around the age of nine when I started drawing cartoon characters. Soon enough, I started to experiment. I began working with pencils, oils, acrylics, watercolours, clay sculpting, relief work, gold gilding. You name it.
It became clear from childhood that this is where my heart was.
I took a special interest in Indian Folk Arts, specifically Tanjore art. Creating artwork that represented my culture was like creating an extension of my identity. I cherished it.
More recently, I’ve learnt some folk arts of India, such as Madhubani, Mural arts of Kerala., these art forms are over 2000 years old.
When you consider all styles of visual arts, I believe Tanjore Painting is the jewel on the crown. It’s probably the most complicated but very structured and disciplined forms of art and craft an artist can create.
I’ve learnt this technique in 1992 from the traditional artist, Sri Venkatesa Raja. National Award Winner (1992) and Shilpa Guru Award Winner (2012). Sri Venkatesa Raja along with his son Gopi Raja and family continues to practice and create masterpieces in Thanjavur.
